Five Cities, One Mission

Science connected for cleaner and healthier lives

Air and noise pollution threaten millions across Europe, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

In five diverse pilot cities, HARMONIE gathers real-world environmental, behavioural, and health data to design targeted, evidence-based interventions.

From Fieldwork to Action

How data turns into impactful measures

Our four-step methodology turns advanced monitoring and modelling into actionable, evidence-based recommendations for city leaders.

From mapping pollutants to assessing health impacts, each phase builds a complete picture that helps cities choose the most effective, sustainable interventions.

Inception
Understand the city

Engage authorities & citizens, map existing tools, choose monitoring sites.

Experimentation
Assess real exposure

Track movements & activity to calculate personal pollution dose, focus on vulnerable groups.

Enablement
Measure and model the environment

Deploy advanced air/noise sensors indoors & outdoors, run mobile/vertical monitoring, create heatmaps.

Transition
Turn data into action

Link pollution to health impacts, produce city-specific policy recommendations.

What we measure

We combine fixed and mobile monitoring networks with innovative tools to capture a detailed picture of air and noise pollution:

Air Quality

PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, NO₂, O3, ultra-fine particles (UFP), black carbon (BC), oxidative potential (OP), and health impact assessment on vulnerable populations through OP measurements across pilot cities.

Noise Levels

Continuous sound monitoring to detect hotspots and patterns.

Indoor & Outdoor Environments

Pollution mapping inside homes, schools, and public spaces.

Personal Exposure

Tracking location and activity to estimate inhaled pollutant dose.

Vulnerable Groups Focus

Children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.
